Jiří CIESLAR
The film and literary critic and essayist Jiří Cieslar was born on February 7th 1951 in Prague. From 1969–1970 he studied at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague (FF UK) in the department of comparative world literature and in the period 1970–1975 studied film science and history at the same school.
Between 1976 and 1989 he worked as an editor for the fortnightly film magazine Záběr. From 1990 he lectured at FF UK, from 1995 he was head of the Institute of Film Studies (formerly the department of film science). From 1990–2005 he was an editor for Literární noviny, he lived in Prague, and he died on 16th January 2006.
Cieslar’s main area of interest was film, but in his eyes it was primarily film linked with literature and philosophy.
