Radka DENEMARKOVÁ
The writer, screenwriter, translator and script editor Radka Denemarková was born on 14 March 1968. She is a graduate of German and Czech Studies from the Faculty of Arts of Prague's Charles University. After her studies she worked as a lecturer at the Department of German of the Faculty of International Relations of VŠE (University of Economics, Prague) and at the Department of Czech of Charles University's Faculty of Arts. In 1997 she was awarded a doctorate in Czech Literature. Between 1998 and 2004 she worked in the Department for 20th Century Literature at the Institute of Czech Literature of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, and simultaneously as a lector and script editor at the Theatre on the Balustrade. She has been freelance since October 2004. She lives in Prague.
Radka Denemarková's creative horizons are to a great extent defined by her interests in literature and the theatre. While her writing draws on her inspiration and powers of invention, with regard to literature and the theatre the author is something of a conduit for the "processing" of specialized material. She is a co-author of the two-part Companion to Czech Writers after 1945 (1995, 1998); she has also written a monograph on Evald Schorm entitled An Enemy to Himself (1998) and the essay Remembering Milena Honzíková (2003). Her translations from the German are for the most part theatre plays; for three years she was responsible for the Theatre on the Balustrade's Bulletin; as a script editor she has been involved in productions which include Thomas Bernhard's Square of Heroes (2003), Heinrich von Kleist's Michael Kohlhaas (2004) and a dramatization of the writings of Franz Kafka entitled Description of a Struggle (2005).
