David DRÁBEK

Share |

The dramatist David Drábek (b. 18 June 1970) graduated in the theory and history of drama at the Arts Faculty of the Palacký University in Olomouc.

The plays written while Drábek was still at university were an eye-opener, with their fresh imagery and imaginative humour. These early plays, no less than the later ones can be described as close to the sources of Surrealism. In 1995, in the city of his university studies, Drábek founded the Burning Giraffes Studio; in the period 1996-2000 he was literary advisor the Moravia Theatre Olomouc, for which the Burning Giraffes serves as an alternative stage. In 2001 the Burning House was set up and operated in Olomouc under Drábek’s management until 2004, when the project’s conception was rejected by the new management of the Moravia Theatre. David Drábek is a regular entrant in the Radok drama competition and his new plays have made him one of the most successful authors in the short history of this ‘tournament’. His plays are the product of an unfettered imagination and can be fairly loosely structured, lending themselves to being appropriately described as cabaret sequences with a gently bubbling plot in which the author targets the crazes of our times, the mindlessness of the media and the permutations of emotionality.
