His mother was imprisoned for political reasons, and Edgar spent two years in a children’s’ home. He passed through several types of employment, lived for a year in Australia, and in 1971 graduated from the department of screen-writing and dramaturgy at FAMU in Prague. From 1974 he worked as a dramaturge, screen writer and director in the Studio of Jiří Trnka and the studio Bratři v triku / Brothers in a Shirt. He is the author or co-author of more than forty animated films, for example, O Maryšce a Vlčím hrádku, Konec krychlee, Všehochlapl, Drátovat, flikovat!, drawn serial Brundibáři. With director and artist Jiří Barta he created Klub odložených (1989), nowadays their feature puppet film Na půdě aneb Kdo má dneska narozeniny? is showed at Czech cinemas. Since the beginning of the nineties, he has been teaching screenwriting and the history of animation at FAMU in Prague. In 2002, he qualified as associate professor. He lives in Prague.
He published the book of tales U útulku 5 (2003), Staženi z kůže ze tmy vycházíme (2007), Záliv osamění (2007), Dvanáct pohádek napadených skřítky Kazisvěty (2009) and the novel Slečno, ras přichází (2004).
