Czech-Slovak writer Róbert Gál was born on May 22, 1968 in Bratislava. Since 1991 he has lived in Prague and is a Czech citizen.

He studied philosophy and sociology at the Charles University in Prague, later completing a fellowship at the New School for Social Research in New York. He’s a free-lance writer and performer, occasionally translating or editing texts. He also devotes time to experimental singing (for example, with his own band, Agnomia Quartet, that performs from time to time).

In 2009-2010 he worked as a journalist at the Literary Newspaper, Literární noviny; in 2004-2005 as an editor of the Prague Literary Review and in 1997-2000 was an editor at the GplusG publishing house. For several years he organized literary and music programs and curated exhibitions at the now legendary literary cafe GplusG in Prague – Vinohrady.

Róbert Gál is the author of ten books and his texts were published in many languages in international anthologies (Absinthe: New European Writing,2010; The Return of Kral Majales, Prague's International Literary Renaissance 1990-2010, 2010; New European Poets, Graywolf Press, 2008; Ars Poetica, Bratislava, 2005; Násilí, 1995) and magazines (3ammagazine.com, Exquisite Corpse, Prague Literary Review, The Prague Post, Stimulus Respond, Muse-Apprentice-Guild, Optimism, Arkadia, Pobocza, Garun, Analogon, Box, Literární noviny, A2, Host, Psí víno, Intelektuál, Princíp, Kultúrny život, Fragment, Echo, Slovenské pohľady, Knižná revue, Romboid, Hudobný život, Vlna).

He completed several scholarships, including: Workshort Residence for Artists in Reca, Slovakia (2009); a two-month creative stay at Yaddo Artists Colony in Saratoga Springs, New York, USA (2005); as well as a two-semester fellowship at The Pew Charitable Trusts Democracy Fellowship at the New School for Social Research in New York (1993-94).
