Theofil HALAMA

The poet Theofil Halama (born 8. 8. 1932 in Mistřovice u Českého Těšína, now beneath the waters of Těrlice dam) went into exile after 1968, finally settling in the USA. He enjoys returning to the Czech Republic though he only does so on occasion. He is now a bilingual writer.

From 1958 he was part of a group of young Ostrava poets and artists. In 1970 he emigrated firstly to Italy: in Rome he studied at Lateran University (he chose theological studies, which he had begun at home), then he went on to the USA to the University of St Thomas in Houston, Texas. He later taught at the University of Houston, the University of St Thomas and in Monterey in California, where he lives today.
