After graduating she worked for the State-Owned Publishing House. In 1991 she founded the Autumn Book Fair, the second largest in the Czech Republic, which she is still director of 19 years on. In 1994, together with her husband Martin, she founded Hejkal Publishing House, which has put out 50 titles to date.
Markéta acted as the Cultural Attaché and Consul to Helsinki 1996-99. In 2009 she began working for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during the Czech Presidency of the European Union. In between she taught Finnish language and literature at the Masaryk University in Brno.
She has written novels, short stories, non-fiction, and a book for children. She has translated Finnish fiction, had a novel (It is always just one night) translated to Russian and a non-fiction book (Mika Waltari, the Finn) translated into English.
Markéta is an active member of International PEN. She has been Vice-president for Czech PEN and the Chair of their Writers in Prison Committee since 2006.
