After passing his school-leaving exams (1983) he studied Russian and history at the Arts Faculty at Charles University from 1983-1988, after which he worked in the Czech and World Literature Institute at the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences until 1990. From 1991 he was employed by the Czech Republic Ministry of Foreign Affairs and from 1991-1995 he was counsellor to the ambassador in Berlin, from 1998 to 2005 he was the director of the secretariat of the Czech-German Fund of the Future, and in 2005 he returned to the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
