The poet, literary editor, critic and radio editor was born on May 28th 1938 in Prague. He studied history and geography at the Faculty of Education in Prague. He made his debut with his poems in the magazine Kultura in 1958. In the years that followed he primarily published poetry and literary reviews in newspapers and magazines. He is an external collaborator with Czech Radio 3-Vltava, for whom he worked as an editor until 2002.

It was for Czechoslovak Radio that he wrote the plays Klíč (1965) and Sisyfos na prázdninách (1969), and he also dramatized Yuri Karlovich Olesha’s prose work Envy (1966) and several other texts. In his radio work as a dramaturg and author he was primarily concerned with presenting poetry on radio. He is the author of many literary programmes for radio, adaptations, literary profiles and also large-scale cycles.

Rudolf Matys was a member of the artistic board of Lyra Pragensis and since 2004 he has been the chairman of the editorial board of the revue Život brought out by Umělecká beseda. He also served on the jury for the literary competition Šrámkova Sobotka, and he continues to serve as a judge for the literary competition Ortenova Kutná Hora.
