Martin Ryšavý was born on April 5th 1967 in Prague. He is a Czech writer, scriptwriter and director. He studied biology at the Faculty of Science at Charles University and scriptwriting at Prague’s FAMU.

He has made several ethnographic documentary films (e.g. Medvědí ostrovy, Země snů for which he was awarded the Pavel Koutecký Prize in 2010) and he wrote the outline and screenplay for the story Cesta, which formed part of the film Co chytneš v žitě (1998) by Roman Vávra, the screenplay for Ivan Vojnár’s film Lesní chodci (2003), which he later adapted into book form, as well as the screenplay for the TV film Aljona (2008).

However, he received most attention for his two-part book Cesty na Sibiř (2008), which won the Magnesia Litera Prize for prose in 2009, in 2010 Vrač won in the same category.
