Nominations for State Awards for Literature and Translation

The Czech Literature Portal can announce the list of 33 writers and 12 translators nominated for the 2010 state awards. The winners will be announced on 25 October 2010 in the Small Hall of the National Gallery in Prague.

2010 Josef Škvorecký Award nominations announced

The Josef Škvorecký Society has announced its 12 nominations for the fourth year of this prize. By mid-August, the jury will have chosen five finalists who will receive 10,000 CZK each, while the winner, whose name will be revealed at the end of September, will get 250,000 CZK.

Jiří Gruntorád receives 1st June Award

On Tuesday 1 June 2010, the mayor of Pilsen Pavel Rödl presented the 1st June Award to Jiří Gruntorád (*21 September 1952 in Prague) for his courageous distribution of banned literature (samizdat) in a totalitarian regime and for establishing the Libri Prohibiti library (Est. 1990), which preserves the largest collection of banned and exiled books, documents, magazines and other materials in the Czech Republic.

The Czech Literary Fund Foundation bestowed its annual awards on 3 June 2010. Vladimír Binar was awarded for the best original Czech literary work for his book Hlava žáru (The Head of Blaze).

Gratias agit prize also for Bohemists

On 30 April 2010, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic Jan Kohout bestowed the Gratias agit accolade to 15 outstanding personalities and organisations for promoting the good name of the Czech Republic abroad. The literary theorist Lubomír Doležel was among the laureates.
