Jana Beranová becomes a Dutch city poet
Poetry Day (Gedichtendag) is a traditional event organized annually in Rotterdam.
This year, it was dedicated to Jana Beranová, a Czech-born poet and translator, who was honoured with the title of “city poet” – an established practice in larger Dutch and Belgian cities - for the period 2009 and 2010.
On 28 January 2010, accompanied by the guitar player Marisa Minder, Beranová crisscrossed Rotterdam on the tram-line 23, reading from her poems and translations and engaging with discusions with the public.
Beranová, an esteemed figure among Dutch literary circles, rose to prominence not only as a poet, but also as one of the leading translators of Czech prose and poetry.
