Jindriska/Gin, the narrator, is an immigrant Czech taxi driver in New York, living in a shared apartment with a Cuban artist Gloria and Josito, a baby they are looking after while his mother serves a prison sentence. Gin’s New York is inhabited by immigrants of all creeds and colors: Alex, the Russian owner of the garage she works for, Kenny, the black American cab dispatcher and the cab drivers Fakim, Sengane and Miss Chang. Everyone is after Gin’s hard-earned money: which she, not surprisingly, wants to keep.
