Essay

The first comprehensive treatment of homosexuality in Czech culture – literature, fine art, theatre and film. Several Czech personalities, works and phenomena are thus always linked to more general tendencies in Euro-American culture, analysed with methods which are rooted in the development of the particular areas of global science. In fourteen monographic chapters, relatively unknown or only partially reflected findings about homoerotic feelings or homosexuality in the works of Czech artists are presented. At the core are almost exclusively works which have contributed to the shaping of modern homosexual identity and have been perceived as canonical by the homosexual community. The title has been put together by Czech – or Czech Republic based – researchers in various humanities fields, of mostly younger and middle generation, who were lead by the literary and cultural historian Martin C. Putna. The book is published as part of the edition Historie.
