In 1985, Iva Pekárková smuggled her first novel to the west hidden in her head. A simple story about friendship, hitchhiking, love, desire, protecting nature and motorway prostitution found an audience all over the world at the beginning of the 90s and helped people in freer countries understand what life must be like behind the Iron Curtain, in fenced off Czechoslovakia.

The friendship between Fialka and Patrik, two wandering souls frantically searching for freedom and the colours of the rainbow in a country which offered only conformist grey, is sure to appeal to readers even today. The book will bring back memories to those who experienced these times. And for those who do not remember the period before the Velvet Revolution, it offers novel and unusual insights into the recent, and yet so difficult to understand, past.
