Lingvistické pohádky (Linguistic Stories, 2006, Golden Ribbon IBBY, Czech Republic’s 2nd Most Beautiful Book), Záhádky (2007, Magnesia Litera – Book of the Year, Golden Ribbon IBBY, Most Beautiful Book of the Czech Republic) and the latest title Přeshádky make up Petr Nikl’s “hádka” (feud, quarrel) trinity about fictitious animals and creatures. Aside from having written the book, Nikl also illustrated it. The hitherto unknown shapes of creatures and words, nonsensical somersaults, surreal situations, micro-stories (or lack of them), and on top of that plenty of mysteries and rumours. In case all of this might seem utterly familiar in connection to Nikl’s work, in Přeshádky his acrobatic literary stunts turn out to be even more breakneck and playful.
