Žlutí lvi (Yellow Lions), Petr Nikl’s debut, was written during his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1986. He had had a very strange dream about a lion. While all the other students kept themselves busy with mandatory classes such as figure drawing and plaster casting, Petr typed his first hand-bound book on an old typewriter and embellished it with uncanny lino-cuts. The magical story about hunters preying on a pack of lions in nocturnal forests could be interpreted as an initiation story of the intrepid son of one of the hunters who gets close to a lion.
